Angus' visit to Sri Lanka

Angus had a great holiday in Sri Lanka with the Riach family. They left Glasgow and arrived in Dubai after nearly 7 hours. Did you know that Dubai airport has 200 gates and a plane leaves every 3 minutes?

After arriving at Colombo Bandaranayke Airport they still had another four and a half hours drive before finally arriving at their hotel.

They had a ride on an elephant called Banda who really likes bananas!

This is one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals. People come to worship the Buddha at the temple.

In Sigiriya they were shown how some ladies make lots of different things from green coconuts. They spin the brown husk into rope. They make the shell into spoons and the white coconut flesh is eaten or boiled down to make oil. Even the leaves can be used to make brooms or woven to make baskets or thatch roofs.

Next stop was Kandy and the view from the hotel was amazing! They visited the Temple of the Tooth, where one of Buddha’s teeth is supposed to be kept in a special casket.

In Bandarawela they visited a tea plantation and learned how the leaves are dried and cut to make the perfect cup of tea.

In Galle they visit3eeds a memorial stone to remember all the people who died in the tsunami which hit the island on 26th December 2004.

Angus also got to hold a turtle! The people look after the turtle eggs until they hatch. They also care for sick turtles. Angus helped to release some back into the sea, it wasn’t easy because the sea kept sweeping them back up the beach!

Angus had a great time. Thanks to all the Raich family for taking him.
