The Scottish LanguageIn class, we have been learning about the Scottish Language. When we talk, we use some English words and some slang words and some words that come from other languages, like German or Danish or Nowegian or French or Latin. I like the Scottish words, like "braw", "stoater" and "wean". They remind me about my country and the people; warm and friendly. There are lots of people who write and sing in Scottish and Scottish people are proud of them. There are poets like Robert Burns, William McGonagle and Paraig MacNeil whose poems are always written in Scottish. It helps people to keep the language alive so it doesn't get forgotten. There are also Scottish singers like The Proclaimers who sing in Scottish about the people of Scotland. I especially like listening to the Proclaimers because John used to live in Leith and they wrote a song about that. Paraig MacNeil came to visit our class in February 2008 to tell us Scottish stories and recite some poems he wrote in Scottish. All the class really enjoyed it. I think that it is really important to remember the Scottish Language and not let it die. Sometimes, if you are in School or are talking to a teacher or another important person, you have to talk properly and be polite. But you can still remember the language and be polite and talk Scottish at the same time. |
