Literacy Week 2008

This week we have been celebrating Literacy week in school. We have had various visitors like story tellers, and even PC Wallace who used to be our jannie, he taught the P6's about report writing.
Each day a bell rang at different times and the whole school stopped what they were doing and read a book for 20 minutes. There is an advertising competition to advertise this "Drop everything and Read" campaign. We had a 'drop everything and read' class competition, and I'm pleased to announce that Chantelle Fairbairn was the winner. Well done to her.
The P1-4 children dressed up as a character from their book and the P5-7 represented their character in a model or picture. The winning model from our class was this wonderful model of Narnia by Lara.

Each class have made activities to go with their class book. We are writing book worm reviews to be displayed in the corridor like a giant worm.
Our class has been doing lots of interesting language work using a newspaper, it called Cruising the News.
Cruising the news
  • We looked at the job section and wrote application letters.
  • We found our ideal houses in the property section and compared prices.
  • We selected stories and summarized them after we had selected the important details, we then shared the stories with the rest of the class.
  • We looked at headlines, guessed what the story was about and then checked to see if we were right.
  • We found lots of words we didn't understand and then looked up their meanings using the dictionaries.
  • We have made lovely collages of our favourite book characters, posters and of course....
  • we have written our book reviews.
Still cruising
Its been a busy week but fun.
