International Education Week 2008We had such fun last week. On Wednesday The Osiligi Troupe Maasai warriors from Kenya came to visit us. The Maasai used to be a major force in Kenyan life with their warrior and nomadic lifestyle. Their numbers have now dwindled and they now form less than 2% of the national population. The government has given them a piece of land and they are now settled in one place where they look for an opportunity to educate their children, to provide ante-natal facilities and to develop their skills of cultivation. The Osiligi Troupe live in an area called Kiserian, 30 miles south of Nairobi. When they visited us, they sang, danced and put on a wee drama about killing a lion. The kids and some teachers had to dance with them. Mr McGlyn did especially well! All the kids really enjoyed themselves. We also had a visit from The Falkirk High Schools Samba Band. I left the photo in my other kilt, but I will put it on the site as soon as it comes out of the wash. The parents got involved in International Week by bringing their knowledge and expertise into the classrooms. They have been telling us about different countries and their experiences. P5M made a beautiful Spanish food collage and P6/5H were going French by making crepes. Our language skills are improving as everyday we are greeted around the school by new sayings in 5 European languages. All the classes are busy with different activities and the children are loving it. I sadly missed some of the fun as I was attending a wedding in Malta, but the children have been entering a competition to design an outfit for me to wear on a visit to a country of their choice. I will have pictures from the wedding and pictures from the competition very soon. All in all, the International Education Week was a great success. Thanks to everyone who took part. |
